ANNOUNCING THE UNIVERSAL DESIGN EDUCATION CHARTER: a fRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE
Singapore – Globally We Design (GloW-DESIGN) is pleased to announce the release of the Universal Design Education Charter. This document is the immediate outcome of GloW-DESIGN’s 2018 ReDesignEd Educators Forum which took place on 24-26 October in Singapore. A cross section of educators, representing all aspects of professional design education leadership from around the world, were assembled at LASALLE College of the Arts, the Forum’s venue host. This group of 36 individuals from 23 countries and teaching at 22
institutions, worked collaboratively and proactively to rethink the future of global design education. This Charter was prepared and accepted by those present, taking collective responsibility as designers to face the rapidly changing world. It recognizes that "design education is the process by which a person is inducted as a designer and becomes a member of the global design community."

The articles comprising the Universal Design Education Charter address the key issues of continuous culture change, knowledge and skills (education), sustainability, technology, acknowledgement (certification) and the betterment of all life as design's primary concern. Arrived at through a three-day, highly-focused, structured, iterative and democratic process, its purpose is to serve as a global, collective and aspirational framework and filter through which design education and curricula are measured, valued and contextualized. Those present represented existing, evolving and emerging design disciplines and a range of nationalities, genders and generations. The Charter will be made available to the public on 29 November 2018.
